Interview with Professor Carl Gombrich who is the head of faculty at The London Interdisciplinary School. The London Interdisciplinary School is a new university with a unique approach to higher education where it focusses on a problem-solving/focussed approach to higher education rather than a subject focussed or singular disciplined approach to higher education. Students focus on studying a specific problem and draw upon various methods and multi-disciplines in approaching their degrees. We discuss the school and other topics focussing on study, education and society.
I met Carl through table tennis, I used to coach his son and in between sessions Carl and I would discuss his work. It would make me reflect on my university studies in which I studied a joint honours degree, however much of the study consisted of isolated disciplines and subjects with little fusion. Indeed, that is what is taught in schools. Subject teaching rather than methods and skills towards attacking and tackling problems. Methods, approaches, strategies and mindsets rather than wrote learning or atomised subjects in a vacuum.
Carl mentioned mindset being a key takeaway for students of the University. They are of course experts in their given problem but they are also attuned to using multiple methods and skills towards tackling problems and this gives them the confidence to apply methodological approaches to any other given problem in industry, academia or society. Carl cites some examples in the interview.
Carl has demonstrable success in his professions as discussed in the interview but he is also a family man who encourages his children to invest in themselves intellectually and holistically, as mentioned I used to coach his son. Carl also is a keen triathlete in his spare time- I don't know how he fits it all in.
